Basement Extensions
Existing basements can be enlarged or extended to provide significant additional living space. Alternatively, new build basements can be incorporated into a rear or side extension or under an existing building.

Benefits of a basement extension
Basement extensions can add significant useable space to your home. One that is professionally constructed can be used as an office, playroom, bedroom, basement studio, home office or theatre. As well as increasing your living space, a basement extension will add value to your home (usually 30-50% more than the basement project cost).
Incorporating a basement into your extension project can be a cost-effective way of gaining a significant increase in floor area with a relatively small increase in the overall building costs. The newly constructed basement acts as the foundation for the extension and therefore the additional cost of the basement will be in the region of 15-25% of the original project cost.
In addition, basements improve the energy efficiency of homes. Heat losses through basement floors and walls are less than those at ground and upper floor levels. Research carried out by BRE found that when looking at two houses of the same above-ground size and construction, the one with a basement is 10% more energy efficient. Living space below ground also offers excellent sound insulation, particularly where a suspended concrete floor is used at ground level.

The resurgence in the interest in basements has been fuelled by the self-build market. Self-builders have recognised the extra flexible living and storage space that basements provide and have used them as home offices, guest bedroom suites, utility rooms, gymnasiums and even swimming pools.
House builders are now beginning to incorporate basements, not only for the more efficient use of expensive land, but also to meet the demands of house buyers for more flexible living space. An added benefit of basements is that they meet the demands of the government for higher density and better levels of sustainability.
